Christmas Eve, on the big screen

Tonight's game: 20 envelopes, one winning date

Dim the lights, mirror the link to the TV and pass them the laptop or phone. One of you made it, the other plays it, and every envelope hides a winter date: a skating rink, a fondue night, a weekend in a snowed-in cabin. Whatever is in the last envelope standing goes in the calendar.

How a game for two works

Most Christmas games are made for a crowded living room. This one is built for a couple. Before the evening, the organizer spends a few minutes filling 20 envelopes across four tiers, from Sweet to Perfect, using suggestions from 199 date ideas or their own words. They also check the three offers the Date Dealer will make.

On the night, the player chooses an envelope to keep and opens the others round by round. Three times the Dealer calls: answer DATE to take the offer and end the game, or NO DATE to burn it and keep going. At the end comes the big question, stick or swap. It is short enough to play twice before the pie is out of the oven, and each replay deals the envelopes in a new order.

Christmas dates to hide in the envelopes

Round by round, on the TV

  1. 01
    Pick

Your partner chooses one of 20 mystery envelopes and keeps it sealed.

  2. 02
    Eliminate

Four rounds of cracking wax seals. Every opened envelope is a date leaving the game.

  3. 03
    Resist

The Date Dealer calls three times with an offer you wrote. DATE, or NO DATE?

  4. 04
    Reveal

Stick or swap, then the last seal breaks. That is your next date.

Other simple Christmas activities for couples

For the nights before or after the game. None of these need anything you don't already have in December.

Need more? The free date night idea generator has plenty more, at home or out.

Make it the gift, too

The game doubles as a present. Read about the Christmas date night gift, slip it into a stocking as a date night stocking stuffer, or, if you're spending the holidays in different places, send the long distance Christmas gift instead.

Questions, answered

What are fun Christmas games for couples at home?

A holiday movie bingo card, a cookie decorating contest, a gingerbread house build with a timer, and a tree ornament story swap are all easy. For something with a prize, DateOrNoDate turns your TV into a game show where every envelope hides a Christmas date.

Is there a Christmas game for two people?

Yes. One of you builds the game ahead of time and the other plays it. The player picks an envelope, opens the rest over four rounds and decides on offers from the Date Dealer, while the builder sits next to them and enjoys the show.

Can we play it on the TV?

Yes. Open the link on a laptop plugged into the TV with HDMI, or mirror a phone or laptop with AirPlay or Chromecast. It also plays fine on a phone, tablet or laptop on its own.

What is a good Christmas gift game for couples?

One that ends with something you do together. This game costs $3.99 once, you can replay it as often as you like (reshuffled every time), and the envelope the player ends up with is your next date.

What Christmas date night games work without kids or a group?

Anything built for exactly two: head-to-head baking, a two-person trivia quiz about your year, or a game with a real date as the prize. Lots of party games need a group; this one needs one player and one audience.

Do we need to download an app?

No. The game runs in the browser. There is no app and no account for the player, and you can add a 4 to 6 digit PIN if you want to keep it locked until the evening.
